This video shows an Earth First! activist known as "Z" climbing an ancient Redwood in the McKay tract in preparation to defend the forest. This is in one of the last two remaining large Redwood groves in the 2,000 acre tract. Green Diamond threatens to log both groves and develop them for real-estate. The government has given them a permit to destroy groves occupied by Northern Spotted Owls, an endangered species.

  • Since you enjoy redwoods, I've got an Essay about potential Wear & Tear to redwood canopies from climbers. Not what's in your video - I mean from research climbers.

    Google this:

mdvaden + redwood canopy wear and tear

Should be among the first results. Give it a read. The page is to get a few more mental gears going.

  • I too worry about wear and tear in the canopy and at ground level. Especially when building tree-sits. Its easy to do it wrong and hurt the tree. Sometimes we live in a tree for years. We use pads to cushion the platforms against the trunk and encourage climbing barefoot or in soft shoes. Of course, if we were not in these trees they would be cut so obviously there's a trade off there.

    Thanks again.

  • Hi Tree, Z here. Good to hear from you man! It's been raining and snowing here but things are well up in the trees.

  • @Panditha666 I'm no environmentalist, but if you go see these trees in person you wouldn't want them cut down either. We should be planting more redwoods rather than letting any of them be cut. I'm a dirtbiker who wants all trails to be open in my state, but I don't like seeing trees get cut, especially redwoods.

  • @Panditha666 do you have any idea how long these trees have been around? There is no reason why giant redwoods should ever be cut down

  • stupid hippies!

  • this was in response to Mrgyn

  • Is it right for "well read" people to pollute the earth and then tell the people who are experiencing the burden of upper-class mistakes first hand that they don't deserve a say in such "scholarly matters"? Absolutely not

  • In the world at large it is the poorest people who suffer the worst from environmental degradation. It is "well read" 1st world consumers whom are largely at fault for the environmental degradation. Our comparatively luxurious lifestyles drain the world of natural resources.

  • yep

  • It seems insane that only 3 % of that incredible ancient redwood forrest is left.

  • well yes my job is physical and there is a veary large adrenaline rush that comes with it how ever for you to conclude that im not well read only tells me that you are not the one to as you put it not the best person to be discussing environmental issues beacuse not only is it veary advanced science but it is also a issue that needs a hands on experance to see just how the enviorment should be handeld
