The only thing I could think up that would provide evidence to deem them excessive would be the fact that you can stomp/soccer kick a grounded opponent many times in a short period of time, whereas it is very rare to see consecutive head kicks to a standing opponent. But even then that's why the ref to stop the fight if one fighter gives up or has taken too much damage.

Yeah, if there is a big difference in skill level, a cut stoppage will not save the worse fighter. But look at the Couture vs Belfort fights. Randy won 2/3 easily, showing he is the better fighter. Belfort's glove cut randy's eye in the second fight, thus leading to a stoppage allowing the worse fighter to win. It's not really elbows that are the problem, its more the problem with cutting (which is a fact of fighting no doubt) but taking out elbows would help the problems with cutting.

@Christian Gonzalez you could very well be right man. But idk there's something about smashing a guys head between your foot and the ring mat that seems a little more damaging than kick to the head while standing.

Totally agree with the last part of your comment, but riddle me this: Is a kick to the head of standing opponent any less dangerous than a kick to the head of a downed opponent? Physics would tell me they do a very similar amount of damage if not more standing because you could walk into a kick thus amplifying the damage. Why then would soccer kicks be excessive if they do the same damage?

Very true. However, a fighter that is much worse than his opponent could easily win the fight with one strike regardless of what limb. One elbow, punch, kick, or knee could end the fight that's just the sport. Elbows definitely cut the most no doubt about that.
