The Catherine Wheel formed in 1990, comprised of singer/guitarist Rob Dickinson, guitarist Brian Futter, bassist Dave Hawes, and drummer Neil Sims. They took their moniker from the firework known as the Catherine wheel named from the medeival torture device. The band was often included in the "shoegaze" scene, characterized by bands that made extensive use of guitar feedback and droning washes of noise. Catherine Wheel's further albums shed the original shoegazing tag by making skillful use of atmospherics, metallic hard rock, keyboards, harmonica and acoustic guitars. Storm Thorgerson and his design team Hipgnosis did many of the band's album and single cover artwork.

  • always loved this lot memories of post baggy shoe gaze.i viewed the world through my fringe lol very serious! also check the early stuff by RIDE and SLOWDIVE if u like this.catherine wheel mark the only cool thing to come from norwich ever.

  • couldn't agree more. I remember the first time I heard Black Metallic. Probably in 1992 or so. So intense. They never got credit for being an incredible band. Unique.

  • Indeed it was HOT. 97 at the worst part.I kept going and cooling off under the showers; fully dressed mind you. I had the worst sunburn in my life from lack of shade.

  • I forgot about that one... I was there for it, in the 90+ degree sun playing football. As I recall, the top two acts were Smashing Pumpkins, then Connells. I remember that show well... Afterwards I passed out from heat exhaustion in a Steak And Shake.. lol

  • No. It was at "Sonic Sunday" in July of '92 at the old Lakewood Amphitheatre.

  • Was that the CW/Slowdive show? I saw them in Atlanta in 1995... Was wonderful except the power going out many times...

  • I own everything that is... Catherine Wheel!

  • I only listen to this album at night. Can apprecitate it then. This is a brilliant track.

  • I'm right there with you EFB85AD. I've been crazy about them since I first heard them at an all day outdoor concert in Atlanta back in '92 right when "Ferment" was getting exposure on the college radio stations here in the states. They did "Black Metallic" and it totally blew me away. I absolutely loved their sound . It was like modern psychedelia at it's finest. Thanks for the post.
