Presidential Candidates: Would you be willing to appoint an atheist to the Supreme Court provided they were a perfect candidate in all other respects?

If you like my question, head on over to http://www.10questions.com and vote for the candidates to answer it. If you didn't like it, go to 10questions anyways and vote for the questions you do like.

Oh, and since I've gotten some comments already, go to my blog for info on where you can get your own Music+Science=Sexy shirt.

I'm Jamie Bernstein from Tucson, AZ.

  • We have atheists on the Canadian supreme court. What's wrong with atheists or other religious minorities on the supreme court. If the judge in question ensures the consitution is being followed appropriately what is wrong with that? What happened to competence? I thought America was a meritocracy where people where not judged by the skin of their colour or religion but on their competence and hard work. You people need to stop listening to John Hagee who is no better than the taliban.

  • That's what it should be, but unfortunately there are too many people here that disagree with you.

  • To finish my thought...

It goes without saying that at this point in time, profession of religious faith is, for all practical purposes, a prerequisite for entry into the political sphere. Regardless of the utter absurdity over whether or not one has the moral fiber to make sound judgments without the aid and inspiration of some great bearded thunderer in the sky, it is -- particularly in an administration like this -- useful to them. Religious fervor is just another weapon in their arsenal.

  • I couldn't have said it better myself.

  • um, im an atheist and so are a very big amount of people in the world who use youtube, and honestly I find that quite offensive, as an atheist will make rational decisions in the supreme court which are not based on a dream that they had the night before!

  • it should be but most american christians forget that judement is not meant to be something they do

  • @AgentGhost Actually, under the law, Relig discrimination is exactly the same as racial, or sexual or other forms. its a protected characteristic under th law.

The job of the SCOTUS is NOT to shape the country. Legislatures and the exec branch does that. Judges (at every level) are exacly that, a JUDGE. They look at a situation, apply the rules, and conclude a result.

If a judge is a faithful, objective "umpire," thats all that matters. regardless if they are ahtiests or not.

Religious discrimination isn't the same as racial, sexual or other forms of discrimination. A belief system is a choice (if there is such a thing). A person in such a high position who's job is to make critical decisions that can shape a country should be expected to have critical thinking skills beyond that of a five year old.

  • @AgentGhost

I'm an atheist, but isn't that just as bad as saying that atheists shouldn't be allowed?

  • I would like that very much. As long as they are competent and use rationale in making decisions.

  • Hell yes, I would be willing to appoint him/her

  • everyone in the supreme court should be an atheist

  • answer - without hesitation - yes

  • I find it hard to believe that a atheist would enjoy widespread public support. Some states don't even allow atheists to hold public office. It's also unlikely that any president now or in the near future would nominate an atheist because they fear their religious constituents. As to their appointment, I would have to check with my advisors and see if the political climate is right for such an appointment. After all, I have important legislation going through, and I don't need distractions.
