Wing Chun Specialist Shawn Obasi joins Bruce Kivo in-studio to discuss Joe Rogan's comments on Kung Fu's worth in an MMA Fight, who the comments may have been aimed at, and more on the presence of Traditional Martial Arts in MMA. Obasi also discusses a possible future on UFC's The Ultimate Fighter in this edition of MMA Confidential TALK with Host Bruce Kivo.
@daytonafreakboy
just because you dont even understand the busaic fandamentals of something, doesnt mean you should laugh when people try to correct you.
Kung Fu, wasnt made for fighting, it was a way of keeping fit, and these excercises being trained and perfected over time are focused on the least amount of energy. its their for philosophy, and spiritual as well. But kung fu has no set ways, everybody's kung fu style is different, and encourage you to learn other styles to create your own.

@daytonafreakboy In answer to your point though, Kung Fu hasn't really been used as a major kickboxing sport until the implementation of Sanda. Before then, Kung Fu practitioners fought in point sparring and continuous matches where kicking below the waist was illegal. So competitive Kung Fu schools stopped teaching about anything below the waist. But the techniques were all there, just as chamber-snap low kicks, rather than a Muay Thai-style hooked swinging low kick.

@daytonafreakboy You've used the same point three times, and you're only response to my argument is "that's a laugh".
I'm starting to get the feeling you don't really want to debate this, you just want someone to tell you you're right. Why? Do you feel insecure enough about your argument that you need that kind of security?

@ZomBLord strange how the chinese waited to start kicking with their shins until AFTER they were defeated by the Thais. you talk about forms?? that is a laugh.. if it has always been 'kungfu' why havent the chinese been kicking with their shins and fighting in the clinch with knees for the last 900 years like the Thais? the chinese claim to have invented everything from hula hoops to goddamn cheeseburgersand elvis. chinese rip off muay thai and call it kungfu - where is their honor?

@daytonafreakboy (1) Those techniques can also be found in some of those old Kung Fu forms people think are useless. Did you think the Thai boxers were the first and only people ever to kick people in the shins and knee them in the face? People do that instinctively without any martial arts training.
(2) Well hooray for Muay Thai. That's why it's such an effective and beautiful striking art. But that doesn't make it the end-all-be-all for Striking MAs.

@ZomBLord then it is very strange how those techniques only surfaced in "kung fu" in the decade after the chinese team were all ko'd by the Thai team.
muay thai is pure combat based practice. has been used combat for over 900 yrs.

@daytonafreakboy San Shou is just the practical application of what traditional Kung Fu survived the post-Boxer Rebellion crackdowns and later Mao's regime.
Punches, kicks, clinches, elbows and knees are some very basic strikes, and shins have always been a major target of kicks. Punch high, and kick mid/low is just basic fighting.
Muay Boran/Muay Thai is just a name for a collection of forms, techniques, and application theory. Not some revolutionary invention.

@Longfistbxr It's already starting to happen. Cung Le has been rising to the top with Sanda, which is just the practical application of the mainstream Wushu style.
Sammi Berik is giving a fairly good representation of Taiji, as well.
I would like to see some Hung Gar, Changquan and Meihuazhuang appear in MMA eventually, but as it stands, I know very few participants in those styles who are interested in MMA at all.

I haven't seen this guy fight but if he actually applies the wing chun sort of kicks and trapping hands I am very happy to see new techniques in mma. But I suspect he is just a very strong highly athletic guy who could basterdise any system into working semi effectively in mma like the old Gary Goodridge. But please prove me wrong.

Traditional Chinese Kung Fu will be applied in the MMA. Yeah I do have to admit that Chinese martial arts does not "appear"to be applicable at the level of the MMA but I guarantee you that it will be used in the MMA within three to five years. Everybody will be jumping on the Kung Fu train when it happens. That the belt will be hard to take away from that person.
