  • @R33Racer Here's a quote from Wiki on the Lightning (or P1) "Roland Beamont (Lightning development-programme chief test pilot), after flying most of the second-generation "Century series" US fighters of that era, made it clear that in his opinion, nothing at that time had the inherent stability and control and docile handling characteristics of the P 1 series Its turn performance and buffet boundaries were well in advance of anything known to him, the Mirage III included.[27] "

  • @FrederickDelarge What about the Phantom?

  • Lightnings are the reason that we (British) slept safe in our beds during the cold war

  • Yep - this beauty was pure British and she performed! The Russians couldn't match her in the early 60's and neither could the Americans. So what went wrong? And don't forget that just then, the futuristic, enigmatic and truly terrifying state of the art and beyond British bomber, the TSR2 was on the point of being rolled out - until the Wilson Labour government, probably under pressure from our 'friends' on the other side of the Atlantic, cancelled it.

  • @FrederickDelarge absolutly right,100 percent

  • That must put a hell of alot of stress on the airframe to have that amount of thrust and not be able to go anywhere.

  • The amazing guys at Bruntingthorpe do this every year for the public at the Cold War Jets day. It is the most amazing experience to be there for a reheat and then a fast taxi run. It not just the noise, it's feeling it in you chest cavity and watching the trees at the end of the runway get shedded in the superfast and hot flow from out the back. I'm going again this year :)
