  • I I wanted to recover diamonds and indicaitors wtih a gold sluice with stream riffles would I just run it slow enough so it clogs with garnets etc and clean up often?

My sluice always clogs with burgundy/pink garnets when I go for gold.

I have family in Larimer CO and would bring my sluice next time I go out if I can use it for diamonds.

  • I think the best way would be to run a long sluice (slow). I have also thought of this method (as have many I'm sure) and have put three sluices together to make one long tom sluice. Diamonds are less specific gravity than garnet, so will drop somewhere behind them (perhaps far down the sluice). The diamond sluices I have seen on the I-net are all very long. I understand there is an Australian Co. looking for diamonds in that county. Best of luck to you!

  • Did you ever find any diamonds?

  • Yes we did. Don't want to start a diamond run, but they are there although you'll have to run tons of material to get a large one (no doubt the gold-dredgers turn them up occasionally but doubtful they stay in the sluices as most have their engines set way to fast to catch a diamond (but do catch gold).

  • Finding a kimberlite formation has got to be special. Did you know to look for one before you headed out on your trip, or did you just happen upon it?

I would have no clue how to classify the material to find tiny little things that have the same specific gravity of all the other rock around it. It is beyond me how the South Africans and Canadians do it so efficiently.

  • We knew exactly what we were looking for, having studied it for the previous year. Our first stop was the Geology Dept. at U of Wy. for samples. They dredge diamonds offshore in SA, the dredge is run slow, then concentrate is put either in a centrifuge or through another sluice with grease (diamonds will stick to grease), what sticks is scraped off, and eyeballed. Careful panning will get diamond, a dredge run slow, the grease, and shaking with a screen and flipping it over will get them.
