Yeah we pay more for everything in Canada....except for healthcare ;)

Good review but I have one suggestion - why don't you get a tripod for your camera? Watching you do things one-handed gets to be a bit unnerving at times......

I was in the military and the best shovel I have ever gotten was a surplus pair of Korea era units with the oak potato masher type handle. I sand blasted it painted OD and sealed with auto grade clear. I filed serration teeth on one side and filed surgery sharp. I can hack thru a 2x4 in minutes, will go thru roots and unfriendlies just as easily. EVERY tri fold civilian model has failed me. See sportsmans guide, usually about $20 w/case.

excellent review, sir i will strongly consider purchasing this shovel

Why will you buy this shovel when you have a CHINESE SHOVEL =P

lol that mod was critical fol destroying the shovel. That thing was there for a reason!!!

Honestly, just invest in an E-tool. Get one military surplus and they're among the best tools you can own (for digging holes, that is) and they won't break on you.

go to 0:47 and keep clicking he says hoe hoe hoe hoe hoe

This shovel is junk. It broke the first time I used it - handle snapped off the blade. Luckily I had a back up.

@jkwanjr as the old saying goes..glad you like it but I don't want it. And I certainly don't want it shoved down my throat.

@astrialkil Mhmm. In Canada we the government pays roughly 33$ per patient whatever the issue. You can see a doctor whenever you want. To see a specialist is a different issue, depending on severity. X ray's also tend to be in a week, but again depends on the severity. No matter the problem it is still free (not including taxes). Sure are healthcare system could be better, and if we paid about $200 more tax but still, it is more convienient if your not a rich and willing to pay a couple thousand
In what way did it fail you? I understand that it no longer opens and closes, but does it need lubrication? Did a part actually break? Could the malfunction be related to your disassembly and modification?
By the way, I have the Cold Steel shovel and in comparison it is simpler thus less likely to fail, but it is significantly heavier. From a backpacker's viewpoint that is a big deal.

@Blakgun It may have something to do with my mod, but I put it back to the way it was originally and the tightening screw no longer turns. I may have wrecked the threads though I don't think so. It is lighter than the CS shovel, but I'd rather have a U-Dig-It than the Gorge.

@envirosponsible Yep, the U-Dig-It style is a good one, but I like something that is big enough to toss dirt on a campfire.
Last summer I was going to get a U-Dig-It but I found a copy for sale at the same store for about $4, so I bought that. Stainless steel and it looks the same. Works fine, just not big enough. So I bought the Gerber Gorge online. It is decent, but I really think that I could design a better, lighter weight pack shovel. Maybe I'll try to market a titanium shovel.
