"Organizations that are to succeed and thrive in the future...are going to find ways to engage the whole human," says Gayle Gregory, motivation and leadership coach and co-author of The Grand Experiment: An Expedition of Self-Discovery.
At times, the problem is our personal fears and the overall trepidations of the group sap the productive power of the team as a whole. To fully engage your team, there are three important things you must remember.
Fear steals commitment. For some, sharing thoughts and suggestions is very difficult. A fear of judgment will stop your individual team members from openly speaking his or her mind. In situations where individual rewards, promotions, or competition for resources exist, a fear of a lack of enough to go around will cause internal conflict in a group. A team that is busy competing amongst itself, cannot also commit itself to competing against your company's market competitors.
Negativity is a choice. When you and your team are presented with a challenge, how do you react? While it is true that some situations are difficult, it is up to you to interpret this as either positive or negative. There are thousands of ways to interpret a new challenge, picking an optimistic and positive view discourages fear and encourages creative thinking.
You are not alone. Individualist behavior breaks groups and organizations apart. Remember, you are more than a collection of individuals; you are a group. Encourage open sharing of ideas, and do not be afraid to ask for more resources, assistance, or expertise from your group members. As a person you are part of a larger unit, the team, and your team is part of a network of interconnected departs that make up a company. Only by fully appreciating the need for cooperation can you make a proactive contribution to the organization.
