well technically speaking, they are caused by objects impacting each other. an object moving at subsonic speed is impacting the air constantly, and as it reaches hypersonic speed, the boom occurs due to the object moving faster than the waves which it creates

@NCC1701J That has nothing to do with it. You will never hear a sound the instant it is made. You're thinking of the sound the stone makes as it passes you, not on impact. On impact the objects involved vibrate, this combined with the displaced air creates a sound wave. Sonic booms aren't caused by objects impacting each other.
