Yokogawa Electric is researching and developing a "gene analysis system" in an effort to realize "individualized medical care" that will ensure that proper medical care is given based on individual genetic characteristics. Yokogawa Electric successfully achieved the world's first continuous gene analysis system that fully automates all the processes in gene analysis from the extraction of DNA from living bacteria to DNA amplification, refining, and detection with a DNA chip. The new system uses an "integrated cartridge" developed exclusively by Yokogawa Electric. Drugs can have different effects on different people, but when the physiological makeup and physical form of a person based on genetic information is examined, we can select drugs that will have a large therapeutic effect and drugs that will have minimal side effects before actually administering those drugs. The genetic information collected on the "integrated cartridge" is read using the "Biochip Reader". A simple, highly reliable, inexpensive biochip reader was achieved that maintains high sensitivity by reading the information using a multibeam laser light. The system is currently in the research and development stage, but Yokogawa Electric is aiming for practical applications in the near future.
