This is your excuse for major, multinational corporations who post billions in profit annually to create working conditions like at foxconn? Weak, weak sauce.
@ThePhilBest "developing countries can't skip this stage"
The point still being that Matt Ridley is a completely useless trust fund baby who failed the bank his Daddy handed him. He shouldn't be allowed to handle a squirt gun loaded with lemonade whereas Bill Gates started a business out of his garage and elevated it to the point where he is one of the richest men in the world.
Bill Gates>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Matt Ridley
@smackrightdown Who forces them to do that? The free market? What were their other options? Staying in subsistence farming and regularly working 36 hours straight and dying in the next famine? Our ancestors went through this and other developing countries can't skip this stage either. They do have the luck that they will get through it faster than our ancestors. Our ancestors didn't have bleeding heart liberals in more advanced countries crusading for better conditions for them.
@smackrightdown Someone can easily be an innovator in the right place at the right time, make bucketloads of money, and not have the foggiest idea about history, economics, or the very conditions that enabled them to do what they did. There have probably been numerous Bill Gates's born in North Korea and Bangladesh - and Henry Fords and Thomas Edisons. Adam Smith did not have to be a wealthy and successful entrepreneur to give humanity its greatest ever economics lesson.
@smackrightdown And it's only exploitation if an oligopoly like the Chinese Communist Party or Vladimir Putin, Inc or G. Soros and his politician buddies makes it that way. There is no equivalent of this that can be said to be a RESULT of free markets.
Matt Ridley is going to school Bill Gates? HA!!!!!! Matt Ridley, a trust fund baby who was handed his Daddy's job and subsequently failed Northern Rock to the tune of 27Billion.
His bank had to beg the BofE for money to stay solvent. He resigned, having been blamed for not recognizing the risks of the bank's financial strategy.
Sounds like he has a lot to teach Bill Gates...notsomuch.
@ThePhilBest it is absurd to expect multinational companies to pay 1st world wages in a developing country"
Who said anything of the sort? Foxconn workers shifts are up to 18 hrs/6days a week. One man just died there b/c he worked 36hrs straight. Many of the workers there are as young as 12 years old. That's unacceptable by any measure.
And if multinational jobs were being offered at 1st world wages, as a FIRST step in an under developed country with 90% of its population at subsistence levels, how would the employees be selected out of the applicants? And would not the lucky 0.001% of people who got the 1st-world pay rate jobs, then become a hated privileged class, probably murdered pretty quickly? Development only ever happens incrementally. Utopian idiots might expect something else but will always fail.

@ThePhilBest "Soros."
No offense, but every time you post this, you look like a complete moron.
Name a time and place in the last 200 years where there was a 'free market'

@ThePhilBest "You have to have target customers with the disposable income to pay your higher prices."
A price is too low if it's made that way through exploitation. End of story.
