have you guys seen the Mixamo auto-rigger? mixamo.com/c/auto-rigger
you get the basic body rig in less than a minute, a good starting point for the skinning work

@XSilverful You have to paint the weights and custom tailor the deformation vert by vert.

I notice in a lot of games on characters where their elbows and knees bend, it squishes weird. Good example is at 3:17 when he's bending her arm. The crease of her elbow goes in and that's always looked so weird to me. Isn't there a way to fix that?

does maya take a long time to figure out? or is it user friendly for people that really want to start animating but dont know how? how long did making her take?

I love Maya... I came over from Max and was initially skeptical, but now I think it's much a more flexible package. In my current position I'm using Max again... and slowly learning to love it again.

How do you get the feet to stay in place when translating the hip for animation ?

Long story, but short answer is: Create some objects that control the feet IK end-effectors; create an object that controls the position/orientation of the hips; make sure those controlling objects are not in the same hierarchy.
