10News Anchor Kimberly Hunt brings us the story of a San Diego student and athlete whose sudden death has prompted change at all San Diego County schools. 15-year-old Eric Paredes was a Steele Canyon High School football player, wrestler and leader among his peers. On July 23, 2009, Eric was home alone. His father dropped by the house to grab lunch and found his son collapsed on the kitchen floor. Eric had suffered a sudden cardiac arrest.
Now, The Save A Life Foundation and a team of 20 doctors and volunteers from Scripps Green Hospital are launching a free program in all San Diego County schools that will offer athletes a questionnaire about family history and whether they've ever fainted, felt dizzy or experienced chest pain during exercise. Students who indicate possible heart problems will be given a free EKG as part of their health screening. The program will launch at Steele Canyon High School in Spring Valley this fall.
Really wish this program was in Dallas, Oregon we lost a High School Athlete not long ago who had an enlarged heart and collapsed after a wrestling match.

I completely agree with pre screening athletes for heart anomalies before participating in sports. With a daughter that has been playing Softball, for years, I plan on being proactive with such a necessary screening process.
