this is not stock gnome-shell, you're using a lot of extensions and you should notice it for avoiding newbies frustration

Don't like how going to the Docky settings looses the background

@swarrior216 I think you are using GNOME Classic. Logout, click on the little gear icon, and select GNOME. Log back in, and see if that works.

I installed Mint 12 and it doesn't look like that. I don't have the menu like you have. It says Applications and Places on top. I'm also new to Linux.

isn't this fallback mode..?

This is how Linux Mint 12 with gnome 3 should be distributed. I upgraded from Mint 10, and I'm going back to 10 again. The out-of-the-box Mint 10 is way better than 12. In 12 we have the old menu in the bottom, the new one on top, no hide menus, if you go to MATE, you don't have a lot of things in the menu (battery is absent, no monitors, no.... ARGHHH).
Swarrior: see to find "Logout" in the menu, do that. You'll see the "log-in" window, where you put your name NOW TAKE CARE: to the right, but just above your name is a wheel-symbol. Click on! Then choose the GNOME session, press return and you are with me! With a program, DCONF (in Other of the menu), you can set Extensions etc. etc. See my website in the Comment to the movie.
