"Simple Man" was originally written and recorded by Lynyrd Skynyrd, back in 1973. The song has been covered by numerous artists over the years and has become a standard. It has appeared in many films, TV shows, commericals, video games, and various other outlets. Shortly after Ronnie Van Zant's grandmother and Gary Rossington's mother died, they got together in Van Zant's apartment and started telling stories about them. Rossington came up with a chord progression, and Van Zant wrote the lyrics based on advice the women in their lives had given them over the years. They wrote it in about an hour. The theme of the song is based on a mother sharing wisdom on the facts of life and growing up with her son. The song is one of those timeless classics that most everyone can relate to. Shawn Goldthwaite always does this tune justice, and I can never get enough of hearing him belt it out. This is one of those rare pieces that always keeps me in check when I solo, and I try not to go over the top with distortion and wild playing, but try to play a little more melodically, to reflect the deep meaning of the lyrics.
