The Key to Happiness

First of all I'd like to note that for the first time in three years, it's not raining on graduation. I for one was not looking forward to getting drenched this year. I'm borrowing my sister's dress and she'd kill me if I ruined the silk.

Three years and ten months ago we were introduced to this institution called high school. And during this time we suffered under loads of homework, strained to balance academics with a myriad of other activities, and fought to establish ourselves as mature and capable adults.

But you know what? All that suffering was not spent in vain. We can all agree that our time in school has enlightened us in multiple ways, inside and outside of the classroom. If you have learned how to write a pretty decent essay at lunchtime in a little under ten minutes, if you have whined and complained about a project but felt proud of yourself upon completion, if you've learned how to work with people you'd much rather drop-kick across the country, and if you've met at least one person who has listened, understood, and given you hope, well then you've had the full high school experience. Congratulations!

We've all had so many experiences that have shaped us into the diverse individuals that we have become, and anyone who has checked out our student body knows that we are a very attractive...ly colorful and impressive class. But despite all our differences I think we can find concurrence in the belief that a major goal in life is to discover happiness. Well, I have found happiness. Do you want to know happiness too? Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you the key to happiness.

Just kidding. Come on, you should know by now that happiness isn't some material object. You should know that there are no shortcuts to your happiness. But yes, I can tell you what happiness is.

Happiness is the ability to respect the life that you're living -- the ability to be proud of yourself for what you've accomplished. I know that every one of you is well equipped to turn your goals into realities. Today stands as a marking stone of your capability. Your education at DV has placed you above a vast portion of the population, and I hope you continue to work hard throughout life to achieve that happiness that you deserve. Yes, there will be obstacles, but if there's one thing that I have learned throughout life, it's that we are so much more capable and resilient than we think we are. So set those goals and believe in yourself. Your happiness is worth the trouble.

I suppose it's fitting that I conclude my speech with something that is generally considered an opening, because this day is much more of a start than an end. I want to thank each and every one of you in the stands for being here. The fact that you're with us today shows that you have impacted at least one of us in some way. DV Class of 2010: don't ever, ever forget the people who have helped you along the way. We've all had our fights and our battles, but many times those that you've quarreled with the most are the ones who love you the most -- and the ones that you love the most. Mom, Dad, I don't know which section of the bleachers you're sitting in right now, but thank you for everything. I'm still your little girl.

Your history makes you who you are, but your aspirations make you who you will become. Things don't happen for a reason; they happen because of a reason. In your studies, in your careers, in all your interactions, strive to become that reason in order to earn the right to call your life your own. Don't ever give up on yourself. You alone possess the key to your happiness. And you are worth every effort.

Thank you.
