Here is the Dalek costume my son and I made this Halloween. It's mostly cardboard and duct tape, with a few other bits and bobs and a whole lot of hot glue. There is a hatch in the front for receiving candy, and a laser for when the treats are not forthcoming! Rowan climbs in through a door in the back, and the whole thing rolls on three small wheels. Exterminate!

  • What is the head dome made of?

  • @CookieMonsterNoVeggi - the head dome is also cardboard. I cut a large piece shaped like a flower, with triangular "petals" that all meet at the middle. It's hard to explain, but if you look around online you can find a paper model of a dalek. That model has a dome with 6 petals, we increased ours to twelve to make it a little smoother.

Again, the goal was too keep it simple. We could have spent a lot more time on the dome, but that would have stopped us before we started.

  • omg, did you listen to that kid in the costume, spot on accurate right there

  • @Bobo1806able - it's a little frightening how much Rowan sounds like a Dalek. He is *really* good at doing robot voices. He also does a killer "GLaDOS" from Portal!

  • To everyone: there are a lot of styrofoam pieces in this costume, the hemispheres, the gun... BE WARNED. Spray paint will cause the foam to disolve!! You need to seal the foam somehow before you spray paint it. We used a primer made for plastic models. That worked okay, next time I will use something better.

  • How did you have the plunger/Ray Gun???

  • @AtomsInTime - the plunger is made of a PVC pipe with the top of a soda bottle spray painted silver and black. The ray gun is also PVC pipe with bits of foam core hot-glued around it and spray-painted silver. If you do that, be careful to seal the foam somehow or the spray paint will "eat" the foam. We used a primer for plastic models, worked okay. Also worked on the smooth foam. Next time I paint foam, I will use a better sealer first.

  • awesome

  • That kicks major Ass my friend. MAJOR.

  • that is so cool

  • yup, i got to see it first hand, you sucked my friends brains out.

  • EXTERMINATE!

  • I need the voice changer helmet from doctorwhogear.co.uk

  • This is incredible! I'm making a Dalek costume for a bar crawl and if it ends up half as good as this I'll be ecstatic! What size polystyrene balls did you use? Would normal paint work on them or would you still have to use the primer? Also, what did you use to make the eye! Really very very impressed with this!
