There isn't really a story line, I was playing more with the idea of Sherlock disregarding his emotions for John in order to protect him. I hope a little bit of that came through!

@rubyslipperz1974 Yes on one level M threatens to kill John, but on another level that's Sherlock's own fears, that he's bad for John, per se. M represents the "arch enemy", but remember what John says about real life? That in real life you see these things differently. So I think Sherlock just needs to overcome his own fear of love, fear of having his heart "burned". And he does for a moment, M is gone to his business as the "devil" and J & S remain onscreen together. Symbolic stuff.

John Watson is Sherlock's rock, reason, blogger, partner in crime, friend and his heart. Moriarty's threat to kill John, the one person he has to come care for. Leaves him cold, because John is his family and reason he lives.
