Greenpeace India activists were joined by actor Abhay Deol in the forests of Mahan, Madhya Pradesh. The actor and a Greenpeace campaigner flew over the forests in a hot-air balloon. During this journey Abhay Deol spoke about the need to protect these forests from coal mining.

The government is under tremendous pressure to open these forests for coal mining. These forests support the livelihoods of millions and are inhabited by wildlife like leopards and bears. Coal mining here will destroy all of this.

Instead of destroying more forests, the government needs to look at energy efficiency measures and alternate clean energy options like renewable energy. These along with the existing stock of coal will help provide electricity for us.
