GHESKIO - Groupe Haïtien dÉtude du Sarcome de Kaposi et des Infectieuses Opportunistes - is the 2010 winner of the prestigious Gates Award for Global Health, joining nine other elite global health organizations which have earned the honor in this tenth year of the award managed by the Global Health Council. The announcement was made by Council President and CEO Jeffrey L. Sturchio and U.S. Secretary of Health & Human Services Kathleen Sebelius at an event organized at the World Health Assembly in Geneva, Swizerland.

GHESKIO was selected for the award because of its years of ground-breaking clinical service, research, and training to treat and prevent the spread of the HIV/AIDS and other related illnesses, as well as its life-saving and swift response to
treat the sick and injured in the aftermath of the January 12 earthquake that devastated Haiti. GHESKIO Founder and Director Dr. Jean William (Bill) Pape will accept formally the award June 17 at the 37th Annual International Conference on Global Health in Washington, D.C.
