LYRICS:
Funny, during my time in war, I thought less about why we were there than how we were going to get home. The fear, though palpable was something we never talked about and drew on the strength of the soldier next to us, for if he wasn't scared, how could we allow ourselves to be? I knew no one named SGT Bixby, but this mythical soldier is representative of a couple of guys whose strength and courage got me through it all.
LYRICS
SGT Bixby Falls
In a foxhole half a world away
Tried to write
But don't know what to say
Told you bout my best friend Jim
Guess I best not mention him
You watch the News
And hang on every word
It's really not as bad as you have heard
They say we've only lost a few
And I will soon come home to you
And I won't get scared at all
Unless SGT Bixby falls
Tough as nails through
All the smoke and flames
But he remembers
All our children's names
I guess he stands about six foot three
And even bigger when he has to be
The kinda guy that knows no fear
He says he's gonna get us out of here
And I won't get scared at all
Unless SGT Bixby falls
(CHORUS)
When the chips are down
He can get real mean
He took a hill with an empty M16
And when the battle got demanding
He'd always be the last man standing
I looked around and swelled with pride
Thanked the Lord he was on our side
When we were almost overrun
He was like a force of one
And I won't get scared at all
Unless SGT Bixby falls
Forget the letter that I wrote you yesterday
The situation on the ground has changed today
We couldn't hold them and although we tried
We loss some ground and some men died
Gotta go, they've yelled "Fall in"
I guess we're going out again
Nobody here admits they're scared
But as for me I feel so unprepared
But I won't get scared at all
Unless SGT Bixby falls
(CHORUS)
When the chips are down
He can get real mean
He took a hill with an empty M16
And when the battle got demanding
He'd always be the last man standing
I looked around and swelled with pride
Thanked the Lord he was on our side
When we were almost overrun
He was like a force of one
And I won't get scared at all
Unless SGT Bixby falls
The Sergeant Major sent down word
Seems everyone but me had heard
SGT Bixby fell last night
In the middle of a firefight
They say at first they were pinned down
But SGT Bixby worked around
Then he did what he did best
Ran some off and killed the rest
But in the middle of that hell
SGT Bixby fell
(CHORUS)
When the chips were down
He could get real mean
He took a hill with an empty M16
And when the battle got demanding
He'd always be the last man standing
I looked around and swelled with pride
Thanked the Lord he was on our side
When we were almost overrun
He was like a force of one
And we won't get scared at all
There's a little SGT Bixby in us all
And we won't get scared at all
There's a little SGT Bixby in us all

Executive Mansion, Washington, November 21, 1864.
Mrs. Bixby, Boston, Massachusetts:
Dear Madam: I have been shown in the files of the War Department a statement of the Adjutant-General of Massachusetts that you are the mother of five sons who have died gloriously on the field of battle. I feel how weak and fruitless must be any words of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering to you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the Republic they died to save. I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom.
Yours very sincerely and respectfully,
Abraham Lincoln.
It was later learned Mr. Lincoln had been misinformed as to the number of Mrs. Bixby's sons who had been killed. She had actually lost only two sons in the war. SGT CHARLES N. BIXBY was killed May 3, 1863. Pvt. Oliver Cromwell Bixby was killed July 30, 1864.
I didn't know until recently about this letter. I had written about a fictional SGT from a more recent time, but it is interesting to note.
This video is a tribute to that fellow soldier that you draw your strength, courage and confidence from during war time, until you deveolp your own.

great video. one of the best that I have seen. I don't expect someone that hasn't been through what we have to understand. They should respect, we do what we are trained to do. We have no option in the matter.

@vetiraq I think that most Americans do understand "basically" what we go through, but part of our job is to go through the Hell so that our countrymen, women and children can enjoy life...unharmed and removed. We do our jobs so they can enjoy the freedoms that are so important to us all.
