He was kind of a jerk who spread a lot of anti-science nonsense so he became a focal point for correcting creationist nonsense, not to mention a bit of entertainment. Later, VFX admitted he had some problems, was hurting from this negative attention, and asked people to lay off.

After that, mocking VFX was like kicking a puppy.
