Voi Che Sapete from the Mozart opera "The marriage of Figaro" was translated into Scottish Gaelic as
"Nighneagan Oga" (literally "Young Girls") by the late Donald John MacDonald of South Uist and is performed here by Mary Sandeman.

  • Wonderful! I wish the words were printed here so as to get the complete beauty of this accomplishment.

Great arrangement, fantsastic voice and gaelic. What a template to follow!

  • Mary Sandeman is amazing!

  • This is great, it's a shame in ways that the Highlands weren't greatly involved in the classical movement, the language is evidently perfect for it.

I'd absolutely love to hear a rendition of Schubert's Ave Maria in the Gaelic. The lyrics are perfect for translation, I can only imagine how beautiful it would sound!

  • Awesome Gaelic.

  • does anyone have the lyrics in Gaelic???

  • @HungryEars Ach mun he could just drop in for his tea being how close to the Highlands and Islands he is at the moment.

  • Brilliant! Scotty (Iowa USA)

  • What a beautiful performance!

I can imagine Wolfgang hearing this and earnestly pleading with God to be able to come back, just for a year or two, to write three or four operas in Scottish Gaelic just for Mary.

Thank you for posting this UistMan59! I had never heard Mary before.

Thank you Donald John MacDonald for giving us this translation!

Thank you dear Wolfgang, for everything!

    And thank you YouTube!
