A Letter for Mama Oluwale - Iya mi mama, Dear Mama

Read at the event Britain On Trial: Young Voices Speak Out! at the Carriageworks, Leeds 29.10.11, organised by Shake! Young Voices in Arts, Media, Race and Power, Leeds Young Authors, Leeds University MA Activism and Social Change. Part of the ESRC Festival of Social Science 2011.

A hard hitting and moving poem by Zodwa Nyoni of Leeds Young Authors dedicated to David Oluwale.

David Oluwale, hounded by police because of his race and at their hands died in 1969. It has been over 30 years since a police officer was charged for a death in police custody.
Oluwale's body was found in the River Aire and a coroner ruled that he had drowned. But 18 months later, a police cadet reported disturbing rumours he had heard about how he died. This sparked an investigation that led to the only case ever of criminal convictions for officers involved in a police-related death since records began in 1970.
