The admin refused to negotiate. They should never have been allowed to use these harsh economic times as a precedent to refuse to negotiate with unions and rely on the government to pass back-to-work legislation.
The York U. admin is greedy, and we must not punish those who stood out in the cold asking for wages that would put them above the poverty line (and by the way CUPE even reduced their demands in an attempt to negotiate).
My peers and I must put the blame where it belongs. We must not deprive workers of the right to strike while a few make six-figure salaries.
One point I concur with you on is that TAs are not the only workers who are suffering right now. That is exactly why back-to-work legislation should not have been passed. Such legislation sends a message to an elite few that they can get away with absurd salaries while others bear the brunt of economic hardship.
Hopefully i can get this out before someone responds, because it's, well, important!:
Looking back to before the strike broke out, where was the mainstream T.V. media when the admin denounced a 5.5% wage increase for TAs as unreasonable, due to the tough economic times, while granting a 112 per cent increase in compensation for university Dean Harvey Skinner, a 20 per cent raise for Associate Dean Asia Weiss and a 16 per cent raise for Dean Robert Drummond?!
I'm sorry if I wasn't clear before, but I understand what the consequences would be for me. Nevertheless, I support the strike, because I understand that it is not TAs who are to blame. The TAs have a right to strike, and if I or one of my fellow students is upset that our education is being held back, we should take it up with those in the York admin. who find the money to make six-figure salaries while the TAs live below the poverty line.
well maybe it is good for the long run but that shouldn`t be putting my education on hold. there has to be a way where 50 000 students don`t suffer the consequences.
the students should strike for lowering tuition fees lol but no one cares that i work two jobs to pay for my degree. :S i just want to graduate!
It's good to see at least one mainstream politician standing up for workers.
The York TAs wage puts them below the poverty line. They have every right to be upset.
I'm a high school senior who plans on attending university next year (though preferably UTM), and I support CUPE. McGuinty's undemocratic attempt to force people back to working under the poverty line must be stopped!
I hope you do. Good luck.
I will tell you that CUPE has made statements saying education should be a right, not a privilege.
In fact, many CUPE members certainly share your concerns, as many are students themselves.
Well, I think I've taken up enough space. Sorry about that.

- to everyone who feels that the TA's have a right to be asking for more money.

As part timers, TA's make quite a bit of money. Undergrads who are working the same amount of hours as TA's can't make as much.
if you were in university now, and your education was on hold because TA's wanted more money would you really be happy with that?
or since you're in grade 12, how would you feel if your teachers went on strike now for the same reasons, and you didn't get to graduate?
TA's aren't the only workers who are not making enough money. All of society has to worry about that.
