Mr Pinker is just another modern day sophist and his pseudo-explanations are a whole lot of hooey that befuddle other people by constructing sham experimental data and presenting them as a scientific fact that is seemingly irrefutable. Who is he really? Not a philosopher or a scientist but only a linguistic maven who uses rhetorical gimmicks to dismiss ideas that he does not like.

everyone's noble for their own end, I think. The trick is getting a group to benefit from a noble ideology. And nothing lasts forever. Even what's "noble" has to change in order to keep man functioning in the world.

You are correct. Having seen the whole talk this is a probably an attempt to discredit the man.

It is misrepresentation. It's like showing Al Gore talking about how great industrialism is and then removing the part where he goes on to say that it has polluted the world and that -that- is his sole motive for giving the lecture in the first place.

This "lecture" as the title suggests is of course only part of a lecture. I have a problem with it that I'm guessing Pinker would share. It's a video of him presenting three ideas of human nature that have dominated for centuries. He will go on to dubunk them and replace them with a more rational and scientific theory. This, however, we do not get to see.
