This clip from FashionTelevision covers a newly released documentary called "Picture Me," which describes the prevalence of eating disorders and other abuses in fashion. The industry's insistence on androgynously skinny models is wholly unnecessary and intensely harmful, both for the models and for society in general, since women inevitably are brainwashed into thinking that they must starve themselves to resemble these emaciated models.
Compare the best images of plus-size models (seen at sites like http://www.judgmentofparis.com ) to the anorexic models who dominate the runways today, and you'll find that the fuller-figured models are far more attractive.
Much props and respect to Sara Ziff for founding a union for the rights of models, and for making this movie exposing the ugly side of the business of beautiful women. Young girls and women should NOT have to starve themselves to the point where they look like Auschwitz survivors, nor should they have to endure sexual harassment or assault from male photographers. I wish more models would call out the industry for its current abuses.
