@IncaRoad01 Frank wasn't happy with the way the album turned out, and since some of the masters where damaged, he took the opportunity to remaster them, irregardless of how bad they where actually damaged.
Had to listen to all of Cruisin - it's been so long. Remember what it said on the cover: " Is this Frank Zappa's last attempt to get in the Top 40?" Such a great album. Thanks for posting!
Yep - I have both versions of Were Only in it For The Money (including the version with Lumpy Gravy). Incidentally, that particular copy has been signed by Jimmy Carl Black!
Anyhow, I had never heard the original version of Cruisin' With Ruben & The Jets ... I have to say, I think the original recordings sound better and more appropriate for the style.
The CD has new bass and drums overdubbed in 1984-5 by Arthur Barrow and Chad Wackerman respectively (none of them was particoularely happy to do that, but since Zappa was the one paying they did it anyway ;-) ), plus everything else was radically remixed, and in some cases other instrument takes have been used.
If you google "Way beyond just drums and bass" you'll find out a very interesting document about what was changed between LP and CD.
I must get a vinyl version of this, the CD remix was just wrong!

Oh, forgot to say: "We're Only in It For The Money" was redone as well, but re-released in 1995 in its original form.
To date, the original version of "Cruising With Ruben & The Jets" remains officially unavailable on CD
