READ IT- BECAUSE THE WAY YOU LIVE IS AFFECTED BY ENGLISH LAW
An appreciation by Phillip Taylor MBE and Elizabeth Taylor of Richmond Green Chambers
We like this book and not just because of the original review comment about it which decorates the upper left-hand corner of the front cover, although we are rather flattered that its there!
Its just that English Law has a number of attributes.
Attribute No. 1 is its readability. How many legal tomes can you name that make the law (which affects us all) sound as interesting and as relevant and as pertinent as it actually is? Our answer would be some, thank goodness, but not all and mores the pity, although to be fair, the law can be extremely complex.
However as an introduction, English Law is, in our view, the best introductory text available. As well as accurate and erudite, it is straightforward, logically structured and accessible and therefore ideal not only for lawyers and law students, but for professionals in other fields.
English Law also works well as a reference book for the general reader. There is no in-built supposition that there are things you know about the law and the legal system already, or if not, you jolly well should. So if you think you know the difference between the magistrates courts and the county courts and/or what solicitors and barristers do and dont do, but you dont really, at least youre not sure, then this is the book for you and luckily you wont need to spend hours trawling through it to fish out the information you want.
As the authors point out in the preface, English law probably exercises more influence, for better or worse, over peoples lives across the world than any other set of legal principles and procedures, i.e. in most of the 53 members of the Commonwealth, comprising 1.8 billion population, or almost a third of the Earths population. Also recall that the original law and legal systems in North America were largely based on the principles of English law.
Here you have an accurate and succinct explanation of how the English legal system currently works and of course the various aspects of English law contained within criminal law, contract law and the law of negligence. The list of contents indicates clearly what is provided in this valuable resource, including:
•Sources of law
•The civil and criminal courts
•The judiciary
•The criminal law
•The law of contract
•The tort of negligence
•The civil process
•The criminal process
•Legal services
You are probably getting the general idea by now that this book is intended to familiarize you with the English legal landscape and is therefore an excellent springboard to launch you into the study of law. The authors have endeavoured to ensure that the text is legally up to date as at March 2009 and they continue to achieve what they have set themselves as a target- describing that the way you live is affected by English Law and will continue to be for the foreseeable future!

@jasonfury1
I agree. It is down to the publishers and law books are very expensive. Do look at the Hammicks second hand books
