Horses donot run out of petrol.

Can cross the worst roads and roughest ground.

Donot get flat batteries in freezing conditions.

Don't start to cook and suffer busted casgets when stuck in the mud.

Can find their own food and water even under a foot of snow and still do 20 mls a day.

Donot require mechanics.

And you can eat them once the food runs out.

In short; ideal for the conditions in Russia during WW2.
