Thats because they were learning how to sell products on tv and radio at the time. It is the same with all parts of film. If you look at early movies (the old term refering to moving picture) everything was exaggerated to make sure viewers could tell what was happening and then with talkies it took them a while to realize that the over exaggeration was no longer needed and figure out how to do it better.

Who were watching the Flintstones back in the sixties, the parents? because it is almost insane to do that on cartoons nowadays.
