Why do yo assume the word is perjorative? From OED: n. A tribal magician credited with powers of healing, seeing the future and protection against the magic of others. Aren't these some of the reason Houngans ask the Loas to intervene on one's behalf? A good a word as any, esp. as the OED says primary deff. of Priest is Christian.

Although the term "witch doctors" has come to be used widely by foreigners, Haitian houngans themselves are insulted when it's used not only because of the image it conjures up, but also it's a term associated with Wicca and sometimes used to mean evil or demean one's practice or religion. They do see themselves as priests and priestesses.
