This episode I recorded during a SyFy Channel Twilight Zone Marathon during the New Years Weekend. Sometimes TZ episodes aren't such a feel-good type episode, but this one was. It's about a tenured teacher (for the last 50-ish years) that is being forced to retire when he thinks he hasn't made a impact.

  • This episode is heartbreaking.GOod but sad.All the ex pupils of this teacher are dead, they were killed in war time.So sad!!This teacher is the only one left alive.

  • ...all too easy to fall into the despair of utter uselessness and futility of life. How often I have wished for the spirit world to push back the veil between our world and theirs to at least show me that it hasn't all been for nothing...that everything will eventually be all right. My time in this world is indeed very short, but it would certainly give one comfort to know that at least someone benefited from the knowledge and wisdom I attempted to impart...but the world had better things to do.

  • 1 person is a producer for The Outer Limits.

  • Eat your heart out, "Mr. Chips". :-P

  • neosoc According to the Wikipedia biography, he was initially a conscientious objector, but changed his position, and was commissioned into the RAF. His Lancaster (Was he the Pilot? Somebody help me here.) was shot down on August 31, 1944, and he spent the rest of the war in a German prison camp.

  • @elmfork52 Wasn't he a conscientious objector?

  • Donald Pleasance had a long and distinguished career. In "The Great Escape" he was the forger who went blind. Pleasance was in the British RAF, was shot down, and spent the rest of the war as a POW. I didn't learn that until I read his obituary. Great actor and perfect for the part.

  • The Twilight Zone could always be counted on to take heartless jerks down several notches but sometime could do the opposite. As in this case it could show a gentle person the true value of their own life. I don't know of anyone who could have played the old professor any better than Donald Pleasance. He was a terrific actor.

  • "...such a class of dunderheads!...But nice dunderheads, and potentially fine young men..." Donald Pleasence is awesome. :)

  • God, I love this series. It has driven stories, well rounded characters, and something that is sadly missing in most TV today: soul. Where are the Twilight Zones and Rod Sterlings today? I think we could use them now, more than ever.
