The regular season is over. This is a new time for a new team. It's the San Diego Chargers team I expected all year, linebacker Shaun Phillips said.
We've been through a lot of adversity, a lot of ups and downs. We were on a roller-coaster all season. We just had to get it back in order. I truly believe our best football is ahead of us.
In a game that seemed destined to end their season in fitting fashion, with the Chargers making gaffe after gaffe and frittering away opportunities, they instead won a playoff game in a manner emblematic of their stunning run through December.
Six minutes and 20 seconds into overtime, Darren Sproles found himself isolated with a defensive end a play coach Norv Turner was considering and then quarterback Philip Rivers called for and ran wide down the sideline 22 yards to the end zone and a 23-17 victory over the Indianapolis Colts on Saturday night.
That was a game of heart, Phillips said of a contest in which LaDainian Tomlinson would score a touchdown and then watch the final 40 minutes from the sideline with a severely strained groin that almost certainly will keep him out the rest of the postseason and require surgery at some point.
