This is a rare, lost featurette reel from 1979 about the making of the film that didn't even appear on the director's edition dvd. Originally posted by Youtube user "Trekkertos", I've cleaned it up a bit here.

  • Roddenberry had this featurette squashed because so many of the fx and aliens that they show in it weren't seen in the finished film. Plus it showed the scrapped Robert Abel effects of the Klingon ship explosions.

  • @LeeMastr Makes sense.

  • There was actually an interview reel on set of the cast, which I rescued, that has so far, never appeared on any home video releases. I have it in 3/4" tape. ??

  • @Scrabo Wow - you could probably make a ton on ebay with that! Can you digitize it?

  • I think they reached a peak in special effects around this time when they were using detailed models , this looked more realistic than CGI ,they need to go back to this .

  • @TheGlenn9 Agreed

  • Man, back when movie making was such an art form instead of just sitting in front of a computer!

  • Very interesting - I agree with many of the comments on here - I wish they'd bring back models - such craftsmanship

  • they used that very same model enterprise in 5 sequels and then it got sold to someone at an auction

  • blowup-ability
