  • It's all about the concept of standing waves. When the waves go through the surface, the surface actually vibrates according to the sound. When the waves bounce off of the edges, they reflect back and cause interference. Due to this interference, there are places where no motion at all is taking place as the waves travel through it. You can see these "nodes" with salt or sugar or similar stuff. Where the particles collect is where the nodes are.
