Research throughout the world has shown that the more inequality in a society the more societal problems--such as poor schools, crime, drug problems etc. Today in the U.S. we have the greatest inequality of developed world with the top 1% owning 41% of the wealth and the bottom 80% of us trying to live on 5% of the wealth. But instead of blaming the income disparities we cut taxes for the rich and attack unions--those very organizations that gave us that great lifestyle of the 50's & 60's.
Our schools are having problems because too many of our children are being raised in poverty and often without parental presence. Public schools in wealthy areas do just fine, thank you. Another, often overlooked problem is the poor diets of our children. Parents are overworked and too often depend on fast foods. High fructose corn syrup is in all of our prepared foods. Vouchers won't solve these problems, but tend to segregate the rich from the poor.
The problem is not how big the government is, the problem is who controls it and how accountable is it to the people is serves. Today our government is bought and paid for by the ultra rich and corporate power. It increasingly became controlled by these minority groups by convincing Americans to cut their taxes and destroy the government that should be there to serve them.
If you attack government, underfund it and do everything you can to prove it doesn't work as have a segment of our political system, then, of course, it won't work
i remember in the 60's and 70's before Reagan came along and popularized the idea that government can't run anything. Then government did a much better job of running many facets of our communities much better and cheaper than we see today with all this privatization.
