Listening to Sean singing Carrickfergus brought back memories of a concert that
I organised in the early '70s in my own home-town. Sean sang Carrickfergus most
beautifully asonly he can. Billa O'Connell, John O'Shae and a young, blind
accordianist by the name of Scannell. (Icannot remember his first name) also took part but Sean's singing was unbelievable. May he keep that voice well
I opened this video and the first thing I thought was, this is not the greatest hairstyle in the world. SImultaneously I thought that this being YouTube and the image obsessed times we live someone will have commented on it already. And they did, step forward spikeesnoop and regale us with more of your witty badinage why don't you.
Seán O'Se became the voice of O Riada's ensemble, which also included Paddy Moloney and other musicians who soon afterward formed the Chieftains, moving Irish music onto the world stage. O'Se's renditions of classic ballads like Carrickfergus are known and loved throughout Ireland and today he continues an active schedule of performing and recording. He is an Irish treasure!

Very credible, in fact. - Sometimes I wonder if O'Riada wasn't just O'Carolan reincarnated.

Does anybody have an English translation from the Irish of the song's original lyric, "Do bhí bean uasal"?

I do not care how miserable he was. He is most under-rated. A wonderful voice. Thanks for posting

Sean was my headmaster back in Cork - at Cathedral Road, and later St Mary's in Knocknaheeny.
Fine oul fella! (Miserable bastard though!)
