Sixteen-year-old Adam Fabiano, a high school junior at College Academy at Broward Community College, envisioned a project that would be both appealing and educational to children. His objectives were achieved on Saturday, April 10, 2010, after he completed making a butterfly garden at Sunset Lakes Elementary School in Miramar, Florida, for his Eagle Scout Project. Fabiano, along with help from 25 others from his family, Boy Scout Troop #424, friends and members from his church, created the 10 ½ by 50 foot butterfly garden just outside the Kindergarten and 1st grade classrooms. Months and hours of preparation went into the planning of this butterfly garden as Fabiano held fundraisers earlier in the year to raise money to purchase plants, flowers, feeders and other items needed to make the garden a success. He raised $850 by doing a car wash and selling tickets for a 14 course Italian dinner at his house. The Home Depots in Weston and Miramar also contributed by providing discounts on flowers and plants, and by donating a gift certificate toward the purchase of items needed for the garden. The project itself consisted of a number of activities including removing existing flora, digging, setting up a pathway through the garden, planting feeder plants that nourish caterpillars, planting nectar plants that attract and nourish butterflies, placing hummingbird feeders and putting in a bench and a fountain. Fabiano has been involved in the scouting program since he was eight-years-old. He moved to South Florida three years ago from Atlanta, Georgia. He is with Boy Scout Troop #424 chartered by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

  • Adam once touched my face. I could feel the warmth and care for nature radiate into my skin. Immediately, all my acne cleared and I threw up 17 caterpillars. It was amazing.
