Islam is the fastest growing religion on earth. However, with this fact comes an unfortunate truth: Islamic fundamentalism has also dramatically increased. It is my sincerest opinion that while the spiritual aspect of Islam poses no threat to Western values and freedoms, it is the accompanying political expression of Islamic law (sharia) that is the single greatest threat to our most cherished liberty: the freedom of expression.

As a catalyst of this endeavor, I watched in shocking disbelief at the violence and carnage that ensued after the republication of the now infamous Danish cartoons of the Islamic prophet Muhammad in the Jyllands-Posten newspaper. Muslims around the world protested with a resounding tone the caricatures of their most sacred prophet. Although most of these protest were relatively peaceful, numerous riots developed that resulted in violent attacks on churches, embassies, and innocent persons. Although power and politics have often clashed with art throughout the ages regardless of the religiosity of the reigning regime, fundamental Islam is inherently hostile towards the liberal arts.

As a civilized people, we should always strive to be respectable and tolerant of other's beliefs. However, when others attempt to silence our dissent with violent protestation and reactionary measures, we must resist oppression and refuse to submit to intimidation or the self-imposed taboos of our politically correct culture, lest our freedom of expression will surely erode to nonexistence. The free expression of ideas is the cornerstone of any liberated society. Uncontroversial and non-offensive ideas rarely need to be defended; it is always the unpopular and dissenting viewpoints that need protections. Therefore, as an artist, and most importantly as an American, I believe it is imperative that we challenge this intolerant reaction and protect our most essential freedom at all cost - even in the face of death itself.

  • Jihad and the Arts is my personal protestation against the fanaticism and violence that followed the publication of the now infamous Danish caricatures of the Islamic prophet Muhammad and the inherently hostile attitudes toward the arts posed by fundamental Islam. As an artist, and most importantly as an American, I believe it is imperative that we challenge this intolerant reaction and protect our freedom of expression at all cost - even in the face of death itself.

  • Great doc. Thx!

  • Islam got to be the dumbest religion on earth. That Muslims believe in it and suffer so much for it. Makes them stupid

  • to Kalev:

    Well done Finland!

To give in to terrorism is not being civilized, is being suicidal.

  • to Vince:

Yes, they are, but muslims lie all the time. Satanic Verses:

Mohammed mumbled something about muslims being allowed to venerate and pray to idols as well as Allah, and of course it contradicted everything he said before (one God only - Allah).

So, muslims have called those verses as 'Satanic' - The Devil himself put those words into Mohammed's mouth.

Today, after 1400 years, they still believe this crap.

  • No.

  • The Koran on earth is said to be a copy of the one with Allah in heaven. Are the Satanic Verses in the heaven Koran too?

  • Is gay stuff in the bible?h,h,h,h,h...

  • How can they say the satanic verses are anti-Islamic proaganda when the satanic verses are right there in the Koran ? LOL, of course, they are told to lie to nonMulsims.
