John, you, among others, have helped guide me through the boundries of hell. Your music is in my soul. For that, I thank you very much

This is awesome...someone just sent me a song by John Prine who I had heard of but never listened to until now..he is a fantastic writer and I look forward to hearing all his songs. I write and put myself into the place of the character in the song and write from their perspective and think he does too....I had this VERY song in mind but could never get it right....he did!! I thought of my mother when writing it, and wonder who he thought of....fantasy and reality....beautiful!!!

is this at smith lake? or just a river?
An "Angel from Montgomery" refers to a pardon for a prison sentence from the governor. It is also used to refer to a last minute pardon from the death sentence. The phrase originated in Alabama where the capital is Montgomery. The way John puts it the woman is living in her own self made prison that she can't escape from, hence she needs a pardon (the angel from Montgomery).

This may be the most magical song ever written. My eyes moisten just thinking about it and I cry when I hear it. Made haunting by..... John Prine! Bonnie may sing it nicely, sing it nicely with John, but the magic must be attributed to John.
