CHAN:
Cambodia's general election is just around the corner. And today, we'll introduce you to the country's current prime minister, who is favored to win at the polls.
STORY:
Even though Prime Minister Hun Sen is widely expected to win, the dissatisfaction surrounding inflation could possibly cost him votes. He has been Cambodia's prime minister since 1985.
Sen was born into a peasant family in 1952, and was educated by Buddhist monks.
In the late 1960s he joined the Communist Party and was a member of the Khmer Rouge. But then he fled to Vietnam to join troops opposed to the regime.
When Vietnam installed a new government in Cambodia in 1979, he returned as minister of foreign affairs, then became prime minister six years later at the age of 33.
Sen's argument to bring peace and stability, and more recently strong growth, virtually assure him of victory in the upcoming elections.
The vote will be monitored by more than 130 European and local election observers.
Your Excellency Sam Rainsy, some defeats are more successful than victories. Our defeats are but stepping stones to victories...
