3D rigid hand tracking for augmented reality applications, using a freescale Zstar3 dev kit and a web cam. The system uses a region, model and level set based 3d tracker to processes the images from the camera. The accelerometer is used to provide a two axis 3d rotation angle which augments the 3d tracker, making it faster and more reliable. The complete solution runs at around 20 frames per second.

  • @thundordan: you are right. the recognition is nothing to be exited about. it actually is a very simple implementation. the 3d tracking however is state of the art. actually following the hard in 3d in real time with a webcam (with out without the accelerometer) is quite hard. look at the playstation move .. they need a big red light bulb :)

  • very impressive Victor Adrian Prisacariu! all romanians are proud of you

  • Now, I don't mean to be rude but, couldn't we already do webcam object recognition? It's even been in cameras & cellphones for years. Not to mention Kinect which has open drivers now.

Also, "anyone" can write a marker recognition webcam app in Flash in <100 lines of code and it works at least as well...

Why makes this thing so great?

  • very impressive
