It is a matter of ongoing dispossession, colonialism and genocide. Cook claimed Australia for the crown. But was it his to claim? Australia was already populated with distinctive nations, boundaries, languages and cultures. It was able to be colonised under Terra Nullius - that Australia was empty, which was clearly false. The High Court overturned the notion of Terra Nullius in the Mabo determination in 1992.
