A day after Samajwadi Party( http://connect.in.com/samajwadi-party/profile-246869.html ), MLA Abu Azmi was slapped by MNS members in the Maharashtra Assembly for taking the oath in Hindi, his Mumbai store was stoned by the Shiv Sena( http://connect.in.com/shiv-sena/profile-254173.html ). Meanwhile, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar( http://connect.in.com/nitish-kumar/profile-1061.html ) says parties like the MNS should be banned.

Anti-Hindi sentiments have had a long history in India and regional language activists opposed to Hindi exist in almost every Indian state. But the preeminence of Hindi is being challenged whereas English is seen as aspirational.

And that brings us to the question of the day that was asked on CNN-IBN show: Is Hindi acceptable to all Indians as the national language?

On the panel of experts to debate the issue were DMK MP MK Kanimozhi, MP and SP leader Virendra Bhatia, actor Darshan V Jariwalla and CNN-IBN Editor-in-Chief Rajdeep Sardesai( http://connect.in.com/rajdeep-sardesai/profile-227465.html ).......

  • how come hindi is regional Language ?

  • Please allow the students to choose their interests... Who are you guys to decide what should i learn what i should not. And for people who want to make hindi a must in all the states.... Just think, what are you going to do for the other oldest languages like Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, Telugu and so on(Sorry if i left some). How can we retain the multilingual pride. And more than that i cant see another ancient language losing its existence like LATIN or SANSKRIT....

  • I work in an MNC. When i went abroad i met a, Turkish, American, Swedish, Czech and more ethnics, I spoke to them in English. But they spoke in their mother tongue among themselves.

  • Wait a minute. . . How many languages you want a student to learn, apart from concentrating on other subject. There is a certain limit to pressurize a Student. Sorry to say this.... English is the language that unites the whole world now. Its a bitter truth. I am a tamilian, AuR MUJHE HINDI MAALUM HAI. I learnt hindi on my own interest and that was my limit too.

  • @jimstane WTF are you talking about? I am a Tamilian.

  • @lchikte I totally agree. Tamil language has some sounds that need special training to master. Its not an easy language to learn, whereas, foreign tourists can pick up basic Hindi phrases. When they can do it, I'm sure south Indians can. This debate is complete bull. I have met MANY south Indians who speak wonderful hindi and completely understand why I can't speak their language with ease. The Tamil lady was just pandering to close-minded language snobs of her state.

  • all political agenda to gain votes all politicians suck balls!!

  • no doubt hindi people have even exploited the eastern biharis. it is the language of madhya pradesh, uttar pradesh, delhi and few more.

  • @lchikte Tamil is an official language in Singapore because the majority of Indian Singaporeans ARE Tamils

  • south indian language is very difficult to learn, I dont know how south indian language is officical language in Singapore.

Hindi language is very easy to learn, any one can learn and speak hindi. My suggestion is Government of India please do compulsory Sanskrit language
