New York Senate Democrat Leader Malcolm Smith--who signed off on a deal to raise $8.5 billion in new taxes from non-Indians--defends Albany's failure to collect taxes due from cigratte sales by Native American tribes.
As much as half of all cigarette sales in NY are now made by Indians to smokers looking to avoid the state's highest-in-the-nation tobacco tax, according to one study.
But Albany has refused to enforce the tax laws relative to these sales, despite GOP attempts--and several new laws--to require it.
In the video, Smith belittles these efforts, but at the same time, some of his fellow Democrats are promising to use the same funds from Indian sales for property tax relief, among other ideas.
