The term "Hockey Mom" is a word play off of the more widely known "Soccer Mom".

"Soccer Mom" was a term widely used in the 1990s to talk about moms who would go to soccer games with their kids.

They became an important voteing block in the 90s elections.

The use of the word "Hockey" is because of the climate and the sports tend to be different in Northern states.
