"Hands"

So I want to write you a poem. Not you specifically, but maybe an earlier you. Yeah, yeah, yeah that's who, an earlier you. Yeah, the you with the braids and the 3 AM smile. Yes, that's you. That's the one I know.

The one that kisses cheeks and
The one that speaks
to me
so soft
and
sweet.

Oh yes she's got beautiful eyes.
Mostly like yours
except maybe with a few less lies.

But, I won't hold that against you.
No,
I won't
Hold that
Against you.

The only thing that I want to hold against you is me.
Yes, and that you can see
through these
two hands.
Two(too)
Soft
Hands.
You know these hands.

Hands that have held hands handily,
handling sighs and cries and perhaps just one too many goodbyes.

But, yes these are my hands and maybe they remember you too.
Maybe they remember beaches and card games.
Maybe they remember the skin of backs
your smooth,
curved,
spine.

But, I think these hands are mine again,
Not so soft anymore,
they've begun to harden.

Yes, I think they're mine,
But, maybe they've spent too much time with yours.
Their story is confused and full.
They feel I'm a fool,
Like my heart,
they feel
I
am
foolish.

Perhaps I am.
It is likely.
More possibly than likely.
More probably than possibly.
More realistically than probably.

Yes, I am foolish.

But so are these hands.
For while pens they hold, their stories are told,
through paper
through song
through soul.
Their stories are told.
