So much of our faith is based on history and heritage. And we're losing it fast.

  • Wow man. Good call.

  • It's a good point but I still think you can like Edwards and Bell at the same time (I do)

  • The last two comments are making me wonder if my point is getting lost somewhere...

    1) I didn't mean to imply that our relationship to God depends on our appreciation for Church history (and eldership). I'm merely trying to encourage those in my generation to make the effort to connect with people, teaching, writings from outside our post-modern bubble.

  • 2) I didn't mean to imply that you couldn't enjoy both Rob Bell's stuff and Jonathan Edwards. In fact, I was trying to encourage people to embrace both. Embrace history and current trends.

This isn't a "one or the other" proposition. I'm not speaking out against the Rob Bell's of the world (whose teaching I listen to on a weekly basis). I'm trying to broaden the perspectives of folks of my generation.

  • It speaks to a larger issue that is on my heart concerning my generation. And that's the sense I get that in our pursuit of new ideas we're marginalizing "elders" in the church. I'm trying to build some bridges here... that's all.

  • @ShaneBertou Hi Shane, I agree 100% with what you said. Based on your video, I believe you would find the Orthodox Church very interesting, do you know much about them?

  • I like your thoughts.

(Just a comment on your shirt logo, which most folks far away would not recognize.)

  • I totally agree! We have a great heritage.. There is nothing new under the sun! God is still the same now as in the days the bible stories where happening! We can learn a lot from these men & women who followed God with their whole heart, mind & soul.

  • i would agree with most of what you said, but i think we should really focus on God moving, not looking to the past. i don't think we've forgotten history, but there are new ways of reaching the lost, and i think that rob bell and donald miller are dead on with there messages.

  • Beautifully said. You mention in the end to actually look to older people and I find that interesting because it seems that there is this invisible wall between different generations of Christians... I wonder what we could learned if we actually bridged that gap.

  • I didn't expect to like this blog message, but yes I get it. And you said it well.

Elders are important. I read something recently about asking yourself who was the most beautiful person you know and how so many responded by naming a person with grey hair.
